1873년 뉴욕항을 떠나 영국으로 항해하던 프랑스 대형 여객선이 영국의 철선과 충돌하는 사고가 발생합니다. 이 충돌사고로 네 자녀를 한꺼번에 잃게된 소식을 전해 받은 Spafford는 시카고를 출발하여 영국행 여객선에 몸을 싣고 배가 침몰한 지점에서 도착하여 파도치는 검은 바다를 내려다 봅니다 그리고 그 엄청난 슬픔과 시련속에서 하나님께 순종하며 주님을 찬양하는 한편의 시를 씁니다. 우리나라에도 공식적인 찬송가(413장)로 채택되어 많은 성도들이 애창하며 큰 힘을 얻고 있습니다.
